Another photo from last weekend’s local holiday parade. Not exactly everyday cycling attire (or cycle), but pretty snappy. The sleeve garter is a nice touch.

LIFE Magazine and Google have joined forces to create a vast photo archive of images, many of which were never published in the magazine. A search for “bicycle” turned up 200 images, including this one of a very dapper (and very young) Jerry Lewis on the set of “The Stooge” (1953, Paramount).

“L’EROICA” is [an Italian] period cyclotouristic rally held mainly on gravel roads, organized since 1997. It is a special “race” from every point of view. It proposes surroundings and scenes from the “heroic” times of cycling: dust or mud, no organized service, vintage refreshments, wonderful and demanding roads, great ability to adapt and to suffer.
We search for the authentic roots of the awesome popularity of that cycling world made by the giants of the roads, which created so much literary legends.
Image from suzannetodd82’s Flickr photostream, which has many more pictures of the event. Used with permission.

This fellow evokes thoughts of cooler weather.
The last of the best images (of gents, anyway) from Sellwood’s gallery of vintage cycling posters.

I like his relaxed attitude. His companion seems to be riding rather hard, however.
Another fine specimen from Sellwood Cycle Repair.

On a Penny Farthing no less! Stuart Kettell, a.k.a. “The Mad Fool” is apparently seven days into his attempt to ride from one end of the United Kingdom to the other to raise money for cancer research. As of this writing, the map on his site shows him north of Tarporley and south of Northwich. The press photos of him on the high wheel show him in a very handsome get-up, but another photo on the site indicates that he will not be traversing the distance in period attire. Ah well…

I especially like the tool kit, a must-have for the cycling gentleman abroad.

Okay, yes, the post title is a Groundskeeper Willie reference from The Simpsons (I couldn’t help myself). There’s almost too much that’s wonderful in this photograph from Da’ Square Wheelman, who writes the very excellent blog The Bicycle Diaries. This purports to be Mr. Wheelman himself at this year’s Lake Pepin Three-Speed Tour (in Red Wing, Minnesotta), sporting not only the kilt, but custom saddle cover, an umbrella holder, a pump, packs galore, lights, a bell, and a stem-mounted water bottle holder. Did I miss anything? Click the image for a larger version, you’ll be glad you did. Also, more images here.
I hope this will be the first of many kilt sightings. Mister Wheelman, any sage bits of advice for would-be kilt-clad cyclists?
